2026 Mexican GP starting grid: Hamilton and Russell keep title hopes alive
Time for reading: 2 minutes

There have not been many incidents worth discussing after qualifying lately. For the most part, when the FIA is involved in handing out penalties, it is usually because a team has opted to use new power unit components, resulting in grid penalties. Today, however, we are here to report on a strange incident involving Liam Lawson (VCARB). The driver from the Faenza-based team mismanaged the power delivery of the MGU-K during qualifying, leading to a reprimand from the stewards. The incident resulted in his qualifying time being deleted. Lawson had already received a one-place grid penalty alongside Verstappen for their contact during FP2.

Otherwise, the grid that emerged from Q3 is rather unusual. Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position, his first with Ferrari, with George Russell alongside him in second. The pair have an opportunity to keep the championship open and maintain the fight with Antonelli. To do so, at least one of them must win the GP and hope Kimi does not finish in the top nine.

Mexican GP starting grid - Formation lap at 21:00 Italian time

Having reviewed all outstanding cases, the FIA has issued its decisions and drawn up the provisional starting order for the Mexican GP. Formation lap at 21:00 Italian time.

Why are we referring to a provisional grid? Because the teams' technicians may still encounter problems with the cars before tomorrow's race and, should it become necessary to replace a component subject to regulatory restrictions, the Federation would be forced to drop the driver concerned several places on the grid.
