Antonio Pizzonia (born on 11 September 1980 in Manaus, Brazil) is a former Brazilian racing driver, known for his career in European junior formulae and for his appearances in Formula 1 as both race driver and test driver in the mid-2000s.
After starting in karting in Brazil, Pizzonia moved to Europe at a young age, quickly building a reputation as a fast driver. In 1999 he won the Formula Renault Eurocup with Cram Competition, and in 2000 secured the British Formula 3 Championship with Carlin, establishing himself as one of the top talents of his generation.
In 2001 he stepped up to the International Formula 3000 Championship, competing until 2003 with mixed results but enough to enter the orbit of Williams, which signed him as a Formula 1 test driver. His race debut in the Circus came in 2003, when he replaced the injured Ralf Schumacher for several races towards the end of the season.
In 2004 Pizzonia raced again in Formula 1 with Williams, stepping in for Juan Pablo Montoya after the latter’s early move to McLaren. That year he achieved his best F1 results, with two sixth-place finishes as his highest placings, contributing points to the team’s Constructors’ Championship campaign. Overall he took part in several Grands Prix between 2003 and 2004, alternating between race and reserve roles.
After his Formula 1 experience, Pizzonia continued his career in GT and touring car racing, competing in Brazil and in international championships including Japan’s Super GT and South American series. Although he did not return to the visibility of his early career peak, he remained active in motorsport for several years.
After concluding his full-time racing career, Antonio Pizzonia gradually stepped away from top-level competition.
