Silverstone Circuit

Historical information

Silverstone was born as a military airport, RAF Silverstone, in 1943. The configuration was the standard one by which all British airfields of World War II were made: three runways arranged in a triangle. These were connected with three dry turns made with straw bales. A very fast circuit was generated.

From 1950 the perimeter roads began to be used for racing, thus giving rise to the circuit proper, the layout of which remained almost unchanged for 37 years.

In 1975 a chicane was constructed in an attempt to limit the speed of the Woodcote curve. In 1987 the Bridge curve was modified. In 1990 and 1991 more major work took place to transform the circuit, which revolutionized it. The works brought it to a slower configuration, depriving it of its historic Stowe, Club and Woodcote turns. The change in configuration was not well liked by Formula 1 drivers.

In 1997 the track was resurfaced and the Priory and Luffield corners were modified; Priory became fast, while the Luffield complex no longer had 2 corners and was reduced to a single corner. The pit lane exit was lengthened and in 1998 the track curbs were colored; first they were white, then they became blue-white, now they are white-red.

In the 2010 season the circuit is lengthened by 760 meters, F1 will use the course originally planned for MotoGP. In the 2011 season the starting grid was moved from its original position between Woodcote and Copse turns and inserted between Club and Abbey turns, where the new pit lane and paddock also arose. The section of the circuit between Woodcote and Copse turns, to which the old pit lane was located, was named the International Straight. It was resurfaced the old F1 start straight in 2012 because it was full of potholes.

At 5.861 kilometers long, the track is the fifth longest on the calendar after Spa-Francorchamps (7.004 km), Jeddah (6.175 km), Las Vegas (6.120 km) and Baku (6.003 km). It features 18 corners and is one of the most exciting and also one of the most demanding for the car-tire package. Some corner combinations, such as turns 10 through 14 - Maggotts, Becketts and Chapel - are taken at high speeds and generate lateral forces on tires and drivers of more than 5 g: the average value at Silverstone is similar to that seen at Spa and Suzuka.
