Historical information

The Silverstone circuit is a motor racing track located a short distance from the village of the same name in the county of Northamptonshire in England. It was on this circuit that the first Formula 1 World Championship race was held on May 13, 1950. It is the historic home (after some interruptions) of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

The surface of the track covers two different counties. Half of the track is in Buckinghamshire territory while the other half is in Northamptonshire. Arranged on a wind-swept plateau, one of its main features is the extreme variability of weather conditions. Three runways are still active within the track and are still used as an airport. During the Grand Prix weekend Silverstone becomes one of Britain's busiest airports, so much so that a special air traffic control center is created.
