Biography of F1 driver Alonso Fernando

www.fernandoalonso.com

Fernando Alonso Díaz (Oviedo, July 29, 1981) is a Spanish car driver, winner of the 2005 and 2006 Formula 1 world championships with the Renault racing team. Nicknamed Magic Alonso and El Nano, in addition to being the most successful Spanish driver, he held the record as the youngest winner of a Formula 1 world championship, achieved at the end of the 2005 season, and as the youngest bi-world champion in the category. With the 2007 season, he became the second driver, after Michael Schumacher, to score more than 100 points in the world championship for three consecutive seasons. In 2014, following his farewell to Ferrari, he emerged as the driver with the most points scored (1190) in the team's history. Alonso is also a UNICEF ambassador and an executive of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association.

As for his landing in the world of racing, with the support of his father, he participated as a child in karting competitions in Spain. Alonso's first win came at age 7 in 1988, the first of eight victories that allowed him to win the title in his category. Although family resources were not enough to ensure the youngster a career in motorsports, to the point that it was his father who was the mechanic, José Luis was aware that only with his son's excellent on-track performance could some sponsors come along. He moved up to the junior category in 1990, and the following year on the Los Santos de la Humosa track he achieved a second place finish in the Spanish category championship. During 1992 he switched to the category reserved for 100 cm³, although this was not yet possible for age reasons; therefore a special waiver was requested for racing participation.

The turning point came when, not yet 12 years old, he was noticed in the Catalan Championship by Genis Marcó, owner of Genikart and importer of chassis and engines. It was with him that in 1993 he managed to impose himself at the national level. From this moment on, the victories for young Alonso followed one another: 3rd at the 1995 Braga World Championship, 1st at the 1996 Ghent World Championship, several National titles and victories in Italy and France as well.

Adrián Campos, a former Minardi driver, gave Alonso the chance to drive a racing car for the first time in October 1998. After three days of testing at the Albacete circuit, he managed to match the lap time of the previous driver, Marc Gené. Later, Campos brought him to compete in the World Series by Nissan; in the second race, also in Albacete, Alonso won for the first time. At the end of the championship he was the best driver and beat tournament rival Manuel Giao by one point, winning and getting the fastest lap during the last race of the season. At the end of the competition, the newly 18-year-old Alonso was again employed by the Faenza-based team as a test driver; tests saw him run 1 second and 5 hundredths faster than any other tester. He landed in the following season, with Team Astromega, in Formula 3000, a series preparatory to Formula 1. In the first seven races he failed to bring his team a single point, while in the last two races he took a second place and a win, enough to finish fourth at the end of the tournament behind Bruno Junqueira, Nicolas Minassian and Mark Webber.

He made his Formula 1 debut in the 2001 season with the Minardi team. His most glorious moment was his move to Renault, whose bond lasted from 2002 to 2006: he won two world titles in 2005 and 2006. After winning his second world championship, he made his move to McLaren official at the end of the season, whose rivalry with Lewis Hamilton, then his teammate, made it all about him; he only spent one season there, then returned to Renault. Another key transfer was his move to Ferrari, which took place in the 2010 season: the Spaniard laid there for no less than 4 seasons, trying to win the world title with the Red, which he saw slip away on 2 occasions, in Abu Dhabi 2010 and in 2013.

In 2014 he announced his move to McLaren, where he faced a dark period due to the lack of performance of the English single-seater; for that reason he decided in 2018 to retire from F1. But his farewell was short-lived: the Spaniard returned to the Circus for the 2021 season with the Alpine team. He has currently been with Aston Martin for two seasons; his racing number is 14. He has been regarded by the press, fans and colleagues, as well as experts as one of the greatest ever talents in motor racing; according to the U.S. magazine Sports Illustrated in 2013 he was ranked third among the world's richest and highest paid sportsmen. His race number is 14, the same number he used in his first kart races. Alonso has been regarded by the press, fans and colleagues as one of the greatest ever talents in motor racing.
