Mexican GP: Three major post-race penalties reshuffle the order as Hirakawa scores
Time for reading: 2 minutes

The Mexican GP delivered an intriguing post-race twist. The FIA continued its work after the race, reviewing all the incidents before ultimately handing out three major penalties. McLaren driver Oscar Piastri came under the stewards’ scrutiny following his collision with Arvid Lindblad (VCARB) a few laps from the finish, while both Alpines, which had finished in the points in Mexico City, were noted for failing to slow sufficiently under double yellow flags.

The penalties

Piastri was handed a 10-second penalty after being deemed responsible for the contact. Colapinto’s Alpine also received a 10-second penalty, while Gasly was given a penalty equivalent to a stop-and-go for his negligence.

How the classification changes

As a result of the penalties, Oscar Piastri, who had finished seventh, drops to P13; Franco Colapinto, who crossed the line eighth, falls to P15, while Pierre Gasly drops from 10th to 17th.

Alpine

The beneficiaries are Liam Lawson, who moves up from P9 to P7 to bring home six points for VCARB (a valuable haul despite reports that the Faenza-based team has already decided not to renew his contract for next season); Gabriel Bortoleto, who scores four points for Audi by rising to P8; Isack Hadjar, who takes two points for Red Bull in P9; and rookie Ryo Hirakawa, who ends his maiden race with Haas by scoring a World Championship point. The Japanese driver is classified 10th.
