21Esteban Gutierrez (born on 5 August 1991 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico) is a Mexican racing driver who competed in the Formula 1 World Championship across several seasons, combining race activity with development and test roles for multiple teams.
After a solid karting background in Mexico and the United States, Gutierrez moved to Europe in the mid-2000s. In 2007 he debuted in Formula BMW USA, later progressing to Formula BMW Europe. In 2008 he won the Formula BMW Europe championship with Josef Kaufmann Racing, earning entry into the Sauber young driver programme.
Between 2009 and 2010 he raced in the Formula 3 Euro Series and GP3, achieving wins and strong results. The decisive step came in 2011 with his entry into the GP2 Series, where he scored a victory in his rookie season and finished third overall in 2012.
His Formula 1 debut came in 2013 with Sauber. He competed in two full seasons with the Swiss team (2013 and 2014), with his best result being seventh place at the 2013 Japanese Grand Prix. After leaving his race seat, he remained in the paddock as a development driver.
In 2015 he served as a Ferrari test driver, working in the simulator and on development programmes. In 2016 he returned to racing as a full-time driver with Haas F1 Team during the American squad’s debut season.
After his time with Haas, Gutierrez continued as a reserve and development driver, working again with Ferrari in 2017 and 2018, before joining the Mercedes organisation in 2019 as a simulator and development driver. He also competed in Formula E with Techeetah.
Among various curiosities, Gutierrez was one of the first Mexican drivers to achieve sustained participation in Formula 1 after the era of Pedro Rodriguez.
