The first Japanese Grand Prix was held at the Fuji circuit in 1976. That year the winner was James Hunt, who also became world champion with McLaren; he also won the following year. From 1977 Fuji was no longer part of the Formula 1 calendar: only 10 years later did the Highest Category return to Japanese soil, in 1987, but at Suzuka, appreciated by drivers and fans alike.
The track is as beautiful as it is complicated: it requires a lot of technique and precision driving. Moreover, this track is the only one in the history of Formula 1 to have an 8-shaped layout, that is, with an underpass and related overpass.
The GP is mostly remembered for the three-year period 1988-90, when there was the struggle between two great rivals, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, whose duels inflamed Formula One in those years. For a few editions, it was part of the MotoGP calendar.
The track record (Suzuka) was set in 2018 by Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes in 1'30"983.
