Historical information

In 2021, for the first time in the history of the Formula One World Championship, the top category will land in Qatar, filling the vacancy in the calendar left by the Australian Grand Prix, which was cancelled due to the problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The agreement between the Grand Prix organisers and Liberty Media envisages a ten-year term starting with the 2023 season, as no event is planned for the 2022 championship with the country focused on hosting the World Cup. In 2023, the construction of a new track specifically for Formula 1 cars is proposed, but the Grand Prix is then kept at the Lusail circuit.

The 2023 edition hosts one of the six Sprints of the season, as is confirmed for the 2024 and 2025 editions.

The 2024 edition sets a record of 154.973 spectators during the race weekend, beating the record of 120.000 spectators recorded in the 2023 edition.
