Season 2025

Williams faced a complicated 2024: after the good growth shown in previous years, it failed to confirm itself in a season marked by ups and downs and many accidents, finishing in penultimate position.

In 2025 it confirmed Alexander Albon and will rely on the experience of Carlos Sainz, who arrived from Ferrari, to maximise results and find more stability. 

James Vowles will continue to drive the team together with Pat Fry, who is entrusted with solving some chronic problems of the previous single-seater, including excessive weight and a certain unpredictability that led to many, too many, accidents. Williams will continue to use Mercedes engines for the 2025 season.

At London's O2 Arena on Feb. 18, the team unveiled the livery of the new single-seater in the presence of General Manager James Vowles and drivers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon. 


History

Williams F1 is a British Formula 1 racing team based in Grove, founded in 1977 by Sir Frank Williams and Sir Patrick Head. Since 2020, it has been entered in the Formula 1 World Championship under the name Williams Racing.

The fourth most successful racing team in history, it boasts a total of sixteen world titles, nine constructors and seven drivers. On 21 August 2020, it was officially sold to the US investment fund Dorilton Capital.

For the 2021 season, the team confirms its driver duo of George Russell and Nicholas Latifi. On 9 June Jost Capito was appointed as new team principal in place of Simon Roberts. In the Austrian Grand Prix Russell takes a Williams into Q3 for the first time since the 2018 Italian Grand Prix. In the race, however, the Englishman, after being in contention for the points zone for a long time, has to settle for 11th position. It was not until the Hungarian Grand Prix that Williams was in the points zone again, in which Latifi, at the end of a thrilling race, scored his first Formula One points by virtue of an eighth-place finish, ahead of team-mate Russell, who finished ninth under the chequered flag, but both gained a position due to the disqualification of Vettel, who finished second. This is the first double top-10 finish since the 2018 Italian Grand Prix, and the first points finish since the 2019 German Grand Prix. In qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, on a wet track, Russell set the second fastest time, giving Williams a front row finish that had been missing since the 2017 Italian Grand Prix. The official Grand Prix results, which reflect the grid due to the adverse weather conditions, confirm second place for the Englishman, a placing that earns Williams its first podium since the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Also George Russell scores further points finishes in the Italian Grand Prix and the following Russian Grand Prix, with a ninth and tenth place respectively. On 28 November came the news of the death of team founder Frank Williams, who died at the age of 79. After three very bad seasons, Williams showed slight progress and ended the championship with a total of 23 points, which moved them up to eighth place in the Constructors' Championship.

The 2022 season saw a change in the driver line-up: George Russell left the team to move to Mercedes, being replaced by Thai driver Alexander Albon, making his return to Formula 1 after a season as a test driver with Red Bull and AlphaTauri. The start of the season was difficult and saw the two drivers permanently relegated to the back of the field. Despite this, Albon gave the team a few points, finishing tenth in the Australian Grand Prix and ninth in the Miami Grand Prix. To see a Williams in the points zone again it would have to wait until the Belgian Grand Prix, in which Albon crossed the line in tenth place. On the eve of the Italian Grand Prix qualifying, Albon suffered an appendicitis attack and was forced to skip the rest of the weekend, being replaced by test driver Nyck De Vries. The Dutchman, making his Formula 1 debut, immediately won his first championship points, finishing the race in ninth place. On the morning of 23 September, the Grove-based team announced the end of Nicholas Latifi's contract at the end of the season. In the Japanese Grand Prix, the Canadian crossed the finish line in ninth place, gaining his first championship points. After timid signs of recovery in the previous season, Williams again took steps backwards, and only scored eight points, which caused it to slip back to tenth and last place in the Constructors' Championship.

In the 2023 season there was a change in the driver line-up: as already announced in 2022, Nicholas Latifi was replaced by Logan Sargeant, promoted from his test driver role, alongside the confirmed Alexander Albon. The new FW45 proves to be a step forward compared to the previous model: in fact, on a few occasions, Albon manages to get into the last qualifying heat, Q3, and to gain a few places in the points zone. The Thai driver finished tenth in the first round of the season in Bahrain, seventh in Canada, eighth in Great Britain and Holland, seventh again in Italy and in the Sprint in Qatar, and ninth in the United States (on this occasion also came Sargeant's first point in Formula 1, who finished tenth) and in the Mexico City Grand Prix. These results allowed Williams to make slight progress again and move up to seventh in the Constructors' Championship with a total of 28 points.

The 2024 season is very difficult for the team, complicated above all by the many accidents involving the three drivers Albon and Sargeant first, Colpainto later. They finish only in ninth position.
