Geographical Information

The Yas Marina motor racing circuit became part of the Formula 1 world championship calendar starting with the 2009 season. Like many recently built championship tracks, it was designed by Hermann Tilke.

Located on Yas Island, about 30 minutes from the city of Abu Dhabi, the circuit winds its way through golf courses, theme parks and ultra-luxury hotels; it hosted the second Middle East grand prix after the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Historical Information

The circuit was built by the Aldar Properties company, which is also the builder of the motor racing theme park, Ferrari World, a marina, residential areas, a water park, as well as hotel and entertainment facilities.

The circuit initially had twenty-one corners, but as of 2021 it has sixteen, stretches 5.281 kilometers, is very fast and smooth, with several overtaking opportunities. There are four large grandstands (Main Grandstand, West Grandstand, North Grandstand, and South Grandstand) and it has a distinctive pit exit that passes under the track.

Difficulties in construction seemed to cast doubt on the race for 2009, but then work proceeded apace and the track was delivered in mid-September 2009. On October 7, 2009, the track received final approval from the FIA. Bruno Senna was the first driver to complete a lap on the circuit.

Construction was entrusted to Cebarco-WCT WLL, specified by the owner, Aldar Properties. Other firms involved include KAH, Voltas, PKE-Siemens, Able-Middle East, Hamilton International, Bau Bickhardt and Unger Steel.

On August 28, 2009, it is announced that the start of the race is postponed to 5 p.m. local time, so that the race starts with the sun and ends at sunset, and to meet the needs of the European public. For this reason, the circuit is equipped with a permanent lighting system, similar to that used at the Losail circuit in Qatar. The lighting is provided by Musco Lighting, the same company that prepared the Qatari circuit.

In February 2010, there was news of Aldar's sale of the facility to the Abu Dhabi government
