Built in just one year by 1,000 workers at a cost of $58 million, it was inaugurated in 2004 with the Marlboro Grand Prix of Qatar, won by Sete Gibernau.
The circuit measures 5.419 km, with the longest straight measuring 1068 meters. The track is surrounded by artificial turf to limit the influx of sand from the nearby desert. A feature of this circuit is the possibility of racing at night, thanks to a perfect lighting system; thus, the 2008 edition of the Qatar Motorcycle Grand Prix was the first Grand Prix race held at night.
In the 2021 Formula 1 season, the circuit will host the Qatar Grand Prix edition, added to the calendar to replace the previously cancelled Australian Grand Prix due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
