Antonelli is too good for Formula 1

Perhaps Formula 1 is not used to a driver like Andrea Kimi Antonelli and perhaps it never will be. The young Italian talent may only be 20 years old, having celebrated his birthday on 25 August, but he carries himself like someone far older. Since arriving in the category, he has always been the sweet, genuine and kind young man, always available and never reluctant to show his true personality.

Last year, also given the difficult rookie season he endured, people were beginning to think that his gentle nature might eventually harm him over the course of his career. Within the paddock, however, there was still hope that time would take its course and eventually provide the answers we wanted.

A resilient personality

Indeed, Antonelli has grown. His 2026 season tells the story of a driver far more mature than he was last year: a championship leader capable of achieving excellent results while retaining the wonderful character that sets him apart.

Antonelli, Mercedes

In his second year in the category, Kimi leads the standings with a decent cushion over his pursuers, Russell and Hamilton. Today, during interviews ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, journalists tried to press him into offering opinions on other drivers — for instance, giving his view on Verstappen's contract extension or commenting on how he should manage the battle at the front, including the fight with his team-mate and Lewis — but Kimi consistently showed his incredible personality.

A pure-hearted driver

When asked to speak about his rivals, he never gave a banal answer, instead prefacing his view with a disarmingly humble statement: “I don't think I am yet in a position, given my limited experience, to make an objective judgement about these people, about this situation.” Not yet…

Antonelli is fighting for an extraordinary goal in 2026 and, in only his second year in F1, finds himself in a position few others before him can say they have experienced. Very few. And yet, despite everything, he remains Kimi: the pure-hearted and kind driver we are all learning to know and love. Andrea is not only astonishing F1. The Bologna native has a talent and a personality that are perhaps too pure even for the world — for the times we are living in… but perhaps that is what makes him such a special driver.
