Patrick Friesacher (born on 26 September 1980 in Wolfsberg, Austria) is a former Austrian racing driver who competed in Formula 1 with Minardi during the first part of the 2005 season, following a solid path through the European junior categories.
After starting in karting, in 1998 he competed in the French Formula Campus championship, finishing third overall. In 1999 he stepped up to French Formula 3, then in 2000 raced in the German F3 championship, an important step to prove himself in a highly competitive technical environment before moving to what was then the top feeder series: Formula 3000.
From 2001 he competed in International Formula 3000, remaining a front-runner for several seasons. During this period he gained experience and consistency, achieving two victories and finishing fifth overall twice, in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. At the time, these results translated into immediate credibility on the driver market and attracted the attention of Formula 1 teams.
His World Championship debut came in 2005 with Minardi: he contested 11 Grands Prix and concluded his F1 stint with 3 points. His most notable result was sixth place at the 2005 United States Grand Prix, a race remembered for a grid reduced to just six cars. His experience ended after the British Grand Prix, when he relinquished his seat to Robert Doornbos amid financial difficulties affecting the programme.
After Formula 1 he remained involved in motorsport in various roles and activities. The last clearly verifiable commitment describes him as an instructor at the Red Bull Ring, an activity mentioned in circuit communications.
