Giorgio Pantano (born on 4 February 1979 in Conselve, in the province of Padua) is an Italian racing driver whose career spans top-level karting, junior categories and one season in Formula 1, before becoming one of the leading figures in GP2 and winning the 2008 title.
After his early years, Pantano established himself primarily in karting, achieving numerous successes at national and international level and entering the radar of the single-seater world at a young age. His move to formula racing came around 1999 and the early 2000s, with a path that quickly placed him in the most competitive European series of the time.
The breakthrough came in 2000, when he won the German Formula 3 Championship, a result that marked him as one of the category’s top drivers and opened the door to higher series. Over the next three years he raced in International Formula 3000, scoring victories and remaining consistently at the front: runner-up in 2002 and third overall in 2003, building a reputation as a driver capable of delivering strong results even without absolute top-tier machinery.
His move to Formula 1 materialised in 2004 with Jordan. He debuted at the Australian Grand Prix and the season unfolded in a difficult context, with limited car competitiveness and team dynamics heavily influenced by budget constraints. Pantano contested 14 championship races with Jordan-Ford, alternating finishes and retirements. His best race result was 13th place, achieved on several occasions, before the team opted to also use Timo Glock in the latter part of the season.
After his F1 experience, Pantano returned to junior formulae and became one of the symbolic drivers of GP2. Following seasons of consistent presence and several victories, the key moment came in 2008: with Racing Engineering he won the championship, combining strong results across the year and four victories, clinching the title mathematically at Monza. It marked the peak of his single-seater career.
In subsequent years he broadened his resume further, racing in the United States and in touring car championships, including GT Open, where he achieved class-level success. His top-level racing phase concluded in the mid-2010s, with a gradual transition towards activities linked to young driver development and technical work in karting.
Pantano remains involved in motorsport through karting, playing a leading role in the Pantano Racing Team project and in the production and development of chassis manufactured in Italy, combining sporting activity with technical product development.
Originally from the Veneto region, Pantano built an international career from kart circuits to the highest open-wheel categories, maintaining a strong link with the formative side of motorsport, now expressed mainly through work with young drivers and technical karting projects.
