Alex Yoong, born on 20 July 1976 in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), is a former Malaysian racing driver, best known as the first representative of his country to compete in Formula 1 and for a long career mainly developed in touring car and GT racing in Asia.
After starting in karting in Southeast Asia, Yoong moved to Europe to develop his single-seater career. In the second half of the 1990s he competed in championships such as British Formula 3 and International Formula 3000, without consistently reaching the front. In parallel, he also took part in the Japanese Formula Nippon championship, broadening his experience across different technical and cultural environments.
His arrival in Formula 1 came in 2001 with Minardi, making his debut at the Italian Grand Prix. He was retained as a race driver for the 2002 season alongside Mark Webber. The year proved extremely difficult: limited car competitiveness and several challenging performances led the team to temporarily sideline him after a few races, before he returned for the final part of the season. His Formula 1 experience ended with limited results, but with strong symbolic value for Malaysian motorsport.
After leaving the Circus, Yoong built the most solid part of his career in Asia. He established himself in touring car and GT racing and became one of the reference drivers in the A1 Grand Prix, where he scored one victory and several strong results with Team Malaysia. He also raced in Japan’s Super GT championship and in regional endurance series, standing out for consistency and professionalism.
In later years he has remained a central figure in the development of motorsport in Southeast Asia, also taking part in promotional events and representative roles. After retiring from full-time racing, he embarked on a career as a television commentator and analyst, becoming one of the most recognisable Formula 1 voices for Asian audiences.
In his private life he maintains a reserved profile.
