Alexander Wurz, born on 15 February 1974 in Waidhofen an der Thaya (Lower Austria, Austria), is a former Austrian Formula 1 driver, winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and, after retiring from racing, a motorsport executive and active promoter of safety in racing.
Son of Franz Wurz, a multiple European rallycross champion, Alexander grew up in an environment deeply connected to racing. After starting in karting, he quickly stood out in the junior categories: in 1992 he won the Formula Opel Lotus Euroseries, while in 1993 he claimed the British Formula 3 Championship with Alan Docking Racing, establishing himself as one of the most promising young drivers in Europe.
His Formula 1 debut came in 1997 with Benetton, initially as a reserve driver. His first race, at the Canadian Grand Prix, immediately turned into a remarkable result, as Wurz finished third and scored a podium on debut. He remained with Benetton in 1998, achieving another third place and contributing solidly to the Constructors’ Championship.
After a period as a test driver, in 2000 he joined McLaren as third driver, a role that allowed him to accumulate crucial mileage in car development. At the same time, he built a top-level endurance career: with Peugeot he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1996, becoming the youngest overall winner in the history of the race, and repeated the feat in 2009 with Audi, confirming his status as an endurance specialist.
His stable return to Formula 1 came in 2005 with Williams, a team he raced for until 2007. During this period he achieved the best result of the second phase of his F1 career with third place at the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix, taking advantage of a particularly selective race. At the end of that season he stepped away from a full-time race seat, remaining connected to the team as a test driver and consultant.
After retiring from single-seater competition, Wurz assumed an increasingly significant role outside the cockpit. He served as president of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, standing out for his concrete commitment to safety, working with the FIA and organisers to improve circuits and procedures. In parallel, he launched a professional career as a circuit designer, signing or updating layouts for international tracks.
In his private life he is married and the father of two children, both involved in motorsport. Within the paddock he is regarded as a reference figure for technical competence, regulatory vision and analytical ability, with his involvement in motorsport continuing in recent years through executive and consultancy roles, the last verified being his presidency of the GPDA until 2021.
