Nyck de Vries (full name Hendrik Johannes Nicasius de Vries) was born on 6 February 1995 in Uitwellingerga, in Friesland. He grew up in international karting and stood out very early, reaching the highest levels of the discipline before moving to single-seaters.
After his karting years, de Vries entered the European junior formulas and built a very linear path: in 2012 he debuted in Formula Renault 2.0, then continued in the Eurocup and the Alps with Koiranen GP. In 2014 he delivered a benchmark season: he won the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and also claimed the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps title, assembling a haul of wins and results that firmly placed him on the radar of junior programmes.
In 2015 he stepped up to Formula Renault 3.5 with DAMS and finished the championship among the protagonists, with podiums and a victory late in the season. In 2016 he raced in GP3 with ART Grand Prix, securing a win and further results that consolidated his credibility within the FIA environment.
The move to FIA Formula 2 came in 2017 and became his main development ground: he went through several learning seasons until 2019 with ART Grand Prix, when he secured the FIA Formula 2 championship title after a season managed with consistency, victories and crucial points in key weekends.
In parallel, de Vries expanded his activity as a driver linked to the Mercedes environment and entered ABB FIA Formula E with Mercedes-EQ. In the 2020-2021 season he won the FIA Formula E World Championship, becoming one of the most solid recent cases of transition between electric categories and pathways towards Formula 1.
In Formula 1 he carved out a role as test and reserve driver for several paddock structures, until the sudden call-up at Monza in 2022: he replaced Alexander Albon at Williams in the Italian Grand Prix and finished in the points on his first appearance, a debut that remains one of the most effective of recent years for a stand-in. For the 2023 season he was selected by AlphaTauri as a race driver, but the relationship ended mid-season: after ten races, the team replaced him with Daniel Ricciardo.
Outside F1, de Vries continues to race at the highest level in official programmes: in Formula E he continues with Mahindra Racing (multi-year agreement announced by the team) and combines endurance commitments in the FIA World Endurance Championship in the Hypercar class with Toyota Gazoo Racing. A regulatory curiosity concerns his personal F1 number: he chose number 21 for his full season, while at Monza 2022 he raced with a reserve number provided under those circumstances.
Looking at the present, in 2026 he is engaged on two fronts: he is expected in Formula E again with Mahindra and appears on the provisional WEC 2026 entry list of Toyota Gazoo Racing in car number 7. In his private life he generally maintains a very reserved profile, with public communication focused mainly on training, track work and activities linked to the official programmes he races with.
