51Pietro Fittipaldi da Cruz, born on 25 June 1996 in Miami (Florida, United States), is a Brazilian-American racing driver belonging to one of the most famous families in motorsport history. He is the grandson of two-time Formula 1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi and the son of Wilson Fittipaldi Jr., himself a former driver and constructor.
Pietro’s career began in karting in North America, before moving to European single-seaters. After his early experiences in Formula 4, in 2016 he won the title in the Formula Renault Series, establishing himself as one of the most competitive drivers in the category. In the same period he also took part in endurance championships and development programmes linked to various manufacturers.
In 2017 he experienced a delicate phase of his career: during a Formula V8 3.5 race at Spa-Francorchamps he was the victim of a serious accident that caused multiple fractures to his legs. The recovery was long and complex, but represented a human and sporting turning point. After months of rehabilitation, Fittipaldi gradually returned to competition, showing remarkable resilience.
In 2018 he made his debut in the Formula 2 World Championship, a category in which he achieved mixed results but useful in consolidating experience in high-level single-seaters. At the same time he entered the Formula 1 environment as a development and test driver, a role that allowed him to work on the simulator and take part in official tests.
His Formula 1 debut came in 2020 with Haas, under exceptional circumstances: Pietro was called to replace Romain Grosjean after the French driver’s serious accident at the Bahrain Grand Prix. He contested two Grands Prix (Sakhir and Abu Dhabi), completing both races and gaining experience in a technically very challenging season for the American team.
In the following years Fittipaldi remained linked to Haas as a reserve and test driver, taking part in free practice sessions, tests and simulator activities. In parallel he developed a career in the United States, competing in the IndyCar Series with race appearances and part-time programmes, as well as experiences in endurance competitions.
Off track, Pietro Fittipaldi represents a new generation of the family dynasty, often also involved in promotional and institutional activities linked to motorsport. The surname he carries is an important legacy, but his career remains characterised by a personal path made up of difficulties, recoveries and continuous adaptation to very different sporting contexts.
