Biography of F1 driver Ocon Esteban

Website: www.esteban-ocon.com

Esteban Ocon was born on 17 September 1996 in Evreux, France. The son of a family with limited financial resources, he grows up in a context in which motorsport represents a total gamble: his parents go as far as living for years in a camper to allow him to pursue his career. He begins racing in karting at the age of nine, quickly standing out in French national championships.

In karting Ocon builds a solid and progressive path, winning the French Minime Championship in 2007 and the Cadet title in 2008. After moving to international categories, he achieves notable results in the KF3 and KF2 series, closing a formative phase characterised by discipline and consistency, elements that will become distinctive traits of his career.

His debut in single-seaters takes place in 2012 with Formula Renault 2.0 Alps, where he scores one victory and several podiums. In 2014 he moves to the European Formula 3 Championship with Prema Powerteam and dominates the series: he wins the title with nine victories, becoming one of the most closely watched drivers in the junior scene. This result opens the doors to the development programmes of the top teams.

In 2015 Ocon joins the GP3 Series with ART Grand Prix and wins the title at his first attempt, imposing himself with a season of great consistency. In 2016 he takes a further step into Formula 2, again with ART Grand Prix, and wins the championship once more at the first attempt, completing a GP3-F2 double that places him among the most reliable profiles of his generation.

His entry into Formula 1 comes in 2016 with Manor Racing, where he makes his debut mid-season. In 2017 he moves to Force India, a team with which he contests two full seasons. During this period he stands out for solid performances and a remarkable ability to maximise results, regularly scoring points and establishing himself as one of the best midfield drivers.

In 2019 he remains without a race seat and takes on the role of Mercedes third driver, a season he uses to refine simulator work and maintain direct contact with Formula 1. He returns in 2020 with Renault (later Alpine), immediately achieving notable results, including second place at the Sakhir Grand Prix.

The most significant moment of his career arrives in 2021, when he claims his first Formula 1 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, becoming the first French driver to win a world championship race in over twenty years. The victory comes at the end of a complex race, managed with great clarity, and represents one of the symbolic successes of the Alpine era.

Between 2022 and 2024 Ocon remains one of the pillars of the Alpine project, alternating podiums and points finishes in technically uneven seasons. In this period he consolidates his reputation as an extremely reliable driver, with a strong work ethic and marked attention to physical and mental preparation.

From a technical point of view, Ocon is known for an aggressive driving style. He is considered a methodical driver, particularly effective in car development work.

A curiosity concerns his race number 31, chosen because it was first used in karting and retained as a symbol of continuity throughout his career. Ocon is very attached to his family and his origins, often cited as a central element in shaping his sporting character.

After the conclusion of the Alpine cycle, Esteban Ocon embarked in 2025 on a new phase of his career with Haas, which confirms him as a race driver also in 2026, within a project oriented towards technical growth and regulatory stability in the new era.
