9Marcus Thorbjorn Ericsson (born on 2 September 1990 in Kumla, Orebro County, Sweden) is a Swedish racing driver, known for a long international career that saw him compete in Formula 1 before establishing himself in the United States as a leading figure in the IndyCar Series.
After beginning his career in karting in Sweden, Ericsson moved to single-seaters at the age of sixteen. In 2007 he won the Formula BMW UK championship with Fortec Motorsport, emerging as one of the most promising young drivers of his generation. In 2008 he debuted in British Formula 3, while in 2009 and 2010 he competed in the GP2 Asia Series and GP2 Series with various teams, achieving notable results and winning the 2010 GP2 Asia Series title with Super Nova Racing.
In 2011 he attempted to reach Formula 1 through the Virgin Racing programme, without securing a race debut. His official Formula 1 debut came in 2014 with Caterham, a difficult season for the team but valuable for gaining experience at the highest level. From 2015 to 2018 he raced with Sauber, later Alfa Romeo Sauber, completing five seasons in Formula 1 overall. During this period his best result was eighth place at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix, demonstrating solidity and reliability in often challenging technical circumstances.
After concluding his Formula 1 career, Ericsson moved to the United States in 2019 to compete in the IndyCar Series with Chip Ganassi Racing. The transition marked a decisive turning point: after an initial adaptation phase, he claimed his first victory at Nashville in 2021 and achieved his most prestigious success in 2022 by winning the Indianapolis 500. In the same season he finished sixth overall in the championship.
From 2024 he joined Andretti Global, continuing to compete full-time in IndyCar. In this phase he has stood out for consistency and his ability to contribute to car development, qualities highly valued in one of the most competitive and technical championships in the world.
Among various curiosities, Ericsson is one of the few Swedish drivers to have competed regularly in Formula 1 in the modern era and is the only one to have won the Indianapolis 500. Off the track he maintains a reserved profile, based primarily in the United States during the IndyCar season.
As of the most recently verified information, his latest official role sees him competing as a full-time IndyCar driver with Andretti Global during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
