Giedo van der Garde (full name Giedo Gijsbertus Gerrit van der Garde, born on 25 April 1985 in Rhenen, Netherlands) is a Dutch driver who reached Formula 1 after a solid career in the feeder categories and a long period in endurance racing.
After karting, he moved into single-seaters in the early 2000s and built a strong reputation in Europe across Formula Renault and Formula 3. His most significant breakthrough came in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, where he won the championship in 2008 with P1 Motorsport.
In subsequent years he competed in GP2 between 2009 and 2012, while also taking on reserve roles in Formula 1. He entered the Formula 1 environment through test and support duties before earning a race seat.
His World Championship debut came in 2013 with Caterham, contesting the full season in a challenging technical context without opportunities to fight for points. His best race result was 14th place in Hungary, completing the season with 19 starts.
In 2014 he joined Sauber as a reserve and test driver. The following winter his name became central to one of the most discussed contractual disputes of the era, involving legal action over the 2015 race seat, eventually resolved through a mutual termination agreement.
After Formula 1, van der Garde focused on endurance racing, where he achieved continuity and success. In 2016 he won the European Le Mans Series LMP2 title with G-Drive Racing and later competed in the FIA WEC and multiple editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
On 16 December 2023 he announced his retirement from racing. In 2026 he is active mainly as a television analyst and guest commentator and as a motorsport public figure.
