Historical information

Silverstone began as a military airport, RAF Silverstone, in 1943. From 1950 it was structured as a permanent circuit, the layout of which remained almost unchanged for 37 years.

In 1951, on July 14, Jose-Froilan Gonzalez won the 4th British Grand Prix, a round valid for the Formula 1 world championship. In 1990 and 1991, more major works took place to transform the circuit, revolutionizing it. The works brought it to a slower configuration, depriving it of its historic Stowe, Club and Woodcote corners. The change in configuration was not well liked by Formula 1 drivers. In 1997 the track was resurfaced and the Priory and Luffield turns were modified. Priory became fast, while the Luffield complex no longer had 2 corners and was reduced to a single corner. In this same year Michael Schumacher won the F1 GP by crossing the finish line in pit lane.

At the end of the 2008 edition, Bernie Ecclestone announced that the British Grand Prix from 2010 would move to the Donington Park track, which had already been used for many years for MotoGP and Superbike and the European Grand Prix.

In July 2008, Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen passed the 500-point threshold at this track. In the history of Formula 1 it had happened only to 3 drivers, including the German Michael Schumacher.

In 2020 it hosted the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix and in 2021 it became the first in the history of the world championship in which experimentation with a new race weekend format took place with the debut of Sprint Qualifying.
