Historical information

The holding of a race in Las Vegas was already on the calendar for the 1980 season: it was supposed to conclude the season on 2 November. However, this event was later cancelled. Of the three races to be held in the United States of America that year, the one most in doubt initially was the one scheduled at Watkins Glen, so much so that Las Vegas itself could have replaced the race by bringing forward the date. In order to replace the missed race to be held at the Glen, the Formula One Commission proposed holding a race on 17 October in Las Vegas, on a track to be built near the Caesars Palace Hotel. In August, the proposal got the green light from the FIA and FOCA. The Las Vegas organisers shelled out $8 million to get the race organised. The 1981 race was awarded the Race Promoters' Trophy as the best organised race of the season.

Already for the 1982 race, the organisers questioned whether the Grand Prix would remain on the calendar, but they had signed a contract until 1984. For 1983, the race was taken off the calendar, after initially being included in it, as there was an agreement between the organisers and NBC to broadcast the race for both 1983 and 1984.

On 31 March 2022, it was announced that the Grand Prix would return to the World Championship calendar starting with the 2023 season. The race is contested on a Saturday on a new city track on the streets of the Las Vegas Strip and is the third Grand Prix to be held in the United States of America after the Miami Grand Prix and the Grand Prix of the same name, for the first time since the 1982 season. The edition was attended by 315,000 spectators, which was a new record for a Grand Prix run in Las Vegas. The next one was attended by 306,000 spectators.
