The fourth place Oscar Piastri brought home in Las Vegas leaves a bitter taste, capping another weekend that pushes him further from the top of the championship standings. The Australian, visibly disappointed after the race, acknowledged both his own mistakes and a series of unfortunate circumstances that affected his performance.
“It was difficult in many ways,” Piastri explained. “The contact at the start and also I made a small mistake early on. The pace, once I had some clean air, was very good, but I had a few unnecessary tough moments that made my life harder.” Competitive race pace, ultimately wasted across a weekend marked by episodes Piastri couldn’t manage as he would have liked — and which ended up hurting his final result.
Looking at the championship, the McLaren driver didn’t hide his frustration: “Obviously the title isn’t getting any closer. But that’s the situation.”
There were several moments throughout the weekend that worked against his recovery efforts: “The yellow flag in qualifying, then the contact into turn 1… there were many difficult factors outside my control. But there were also things that were in my control, and I’ll try to fix those next time.”
With the American weekend now behind him, Piastri shifts his focus to the next round in Qatar — a track where McLaren has previously shown strong potential: “We’ll see how it goes in Qatar,” he concluded, aware that he will need a clean weekend to return to fighting for the title.
