Historical information

After the first editions at the Interlagos circuit on the outskirts of São Paulo, the race moved to the Jacarepaguá circuit near Rio de Janeiro for most of the 1980s before returning to the recently redesigned Interlagos. In 2004, the race was moved from April to October to avoid the risk of torrential rain that marked some editions, while for 2006, a postponement to November was considered, to facilitate an increasingly dense championship calendar.

On 25 September 2005 for the first time a Drivers' World Championship title was mathematically awarded during the Brazilian Grand Prix, with Fernando Alonso's victory on a Renault, who finished third in the race won by Juan Pablo Montoya. The same situation happened the following year, with Alonso defending his accumulated lead over Michael Schumacher and repeating the title, while the race was won by Felipe Massa.

On 21 October 2007 for the third time the drivers' world title was awarded at Interlagos. Kimi Räikkönen in a Ferrari won the race and thanks to the second place of his team-mate Felipe Massa, the third place of Fernando Alonso in a McLaren-Mercedes and above all the seventh place of Lewis Hamilton, also in a McLaren-Mercedes, he was able to recover the 7-point gap from the latter, winning the world title with just 1 point.

The Grand Prix scheduled for the 2020 season is cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of the 2021 season, the event changes its name and the Interlagos circuit hosts the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The Brazilian Grand Prix was also on the Formula Libre calendar from 1928 until the mid-1950s, and was held at the Interlagos circuit.
