Nicolas “Nico” Hulkenberg (born on 19 August 1987 in Emmerich am Rhein, Germany) is a German racing driver, the protagonist of a long and wide-ranging career across single-seaters and endurance racing, with a junior career built on titles won as a rookie and a Formula 1 presence that began in 2010.
After his karting years, Hulkenberg quickly established himself in the junior categories with a sequence of successes that propelled him to the top in just a few seasons: in 2005 he won the Formula BMW ADAC with Josef Kaufmann Racing; in 2006-2007 he claimed the A1 Grand Prix title with Germany; in 2008 he dominated the F3 Euro Series with ART Grand Prix; and in 2009 he became GP2 Series champion, again with ART Grand Prix, winning the title at his first attempt.
His Formula 1 debut came in 2010 with Williams: during his rookie season he delivered one of his most iconic results with pole position at the 2010 Brazilian Grand Prix, achieved in difficult and changeable conditions. From that point he built a solid midfield career across several teams, combining consistency, strong race pace and a technical reputation highly regarded within the paddock.
Over the following years he raced, either as a full-time driver or across complete seasons, for Force India, Sauber, Renault and later Haas; during this period he also made substitute appearances when called upon at short notice. Despite frequently running close to the best midfield results, he long carried the statistical record for most starts without a podium, becoming one of the grid’s constants for experience and reliability.
Alongside Formula 1, Hulkenberg achieved one of the most prestigious results of his career in endurance racing: in 2015 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Porsche, securing overall victory in a standout one-off appearance.
In 2025 he returned as a full-time driver at Hinwil with Kick Sauber. In the season in which the team prepared its transformation into the official Audi project, Hulkenberg finally reached a long-awaited milestone by scoring his first Formula 1 podium with third place at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, achieved at his 239th start.
Hulkenberg has a multi-year agreement with Sauber and in 2026 will be one of the drivers of the official Audi team at its Formula 1 debut. He races with the number 27.
Off the track, Hulkenberg is regarded as a reserved figure with a pragmatic approach to life in the paddock, often highlighting in recent years the importance of balance between professional racing activity and family life.
