Biography of F1 driver Piastri Oscar

Website: oscarpiastri.com

Oscar Piastri was born on 6 April 2001 in Melbourne, Australia. He began racing in karting at the age of nine, following a development path initially built in Australia before moving to Europe, a decisive choice for building a structured and competitive international career.

After his early experiences in European karting championships, Piastri moved to single-seaters in 2016. In 2017 he contested the British Formula 4 Championship with Arden, achieving podiums and victories that highlighted his rapid learning ability. The following year he tackled the Formula Renault Eurocup, a category in which he progressively consolidated his technical profile.

The leap in quality came in 2019: with the R-ace GP team he won the Formula Renault Eurocup Championship, prevailing through consistency and race management. It was the first step in a sequence of successes that would clearly mark his career in the junior formulas.

In 2020 he debuted in the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Prema Racing and won the title at his first attempt, standing out for tactical maturity and his ability to capitalise on every opportunity. In 2021 he repeated the feat in Formula 2, again with Prema, winning that championship as well at the first attempt. He thus became one of the very few drivers in recent history to consecutively win Formula Renault, Formula 3 and Formula 2 without intermediate seasons, a path that places him among the most complete prospects of his generation.

In 2022 he held the role of third driver and test driver, working intensively on the simulator and in private tests, activities that strengthened his technical background ahead of his entry into Formula 1. His official debut came in 2023 with McLaren, the team with which he faced his first full season in the top category.

During 2023 Piastri showed constant growth: he achieved his first Formula 1 podium and secured a victory in a Sprint Race, results that certified his ability to adapt at the highest level of competition. The season also marked the strengthening of his role within the McLaren technical project.

2024 represented a turning point. With a McLaren now consistently competitive, Piastri secured his first Formula 1 Grand Prix victory and added further successes and podiums over the course of the season. His performance became increasingly solid, reducing the gap to his team-mate and contributing decisively to the team’s overall results.

In 2025 Piastri confirmed himself as one of the reference drivers at the front. He was a protagonist throughout the season in the fight for top positions, contributing to McLaren’s technical dominance and remaining involved in the direct title battle until the decisive phases of the championship, which was then won by his team-mate. The year definitively consolidated his status as a top-level Formula 1 driver.

From a technical standpoint, Piastri is appreciated for an extremely clean driving style, great precision on corner entry and remarkable tyre management ability. He is considered a very analytical and rational driver, with a methodical approach to working with engineers and a strong predisposition towards car development.

A curiosity concerns race number 81, chosen to recall a personal combination linked to his early years and maintained in Formula 1 as an identity element. Off track he maintains a reserved profile, with interests linked to cycling, fitness and simulation activities, tools he also uses to support his sporting preparation.

Oscar Piastri is under a long-term contract with McLaren and will also contest the 2026 Formula 1 season with the reigning World Champion team, remaining one of the pillars of the technical project in the new regulatory era.
