Belgian GP

Historical information

The Spa-Francorchamps circuit is one of the longest in use in the Formula One World Championship. The facility was only prepared to host the annual Belgian Grand Prix in 1985. The track, which is also one of the fastest, underwent several modifications in 1994 after the tragic accidents at Imola. The Eau Rouge chicane, however, was first completely redesigned to comply with strict safety regulations, and then in 1995 returned to the original track. The races held on this circuit are always very close, as the generous size of the track allows overtaking to be attempted at several points.

In 2022 the circuit underwent a major upgrade of the safety facilities. The section of track that features the Eau Rouge/Radillion complex, in the first sector, now sees the escape routes widened, with gravel introduced instead of asphalt. The changes were made in response to several major accidents in recent years on this section of the track, including the fatal accident that occurred to French Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert in 2019.

The track, currently the longest on the calendar, is 7.004 kilometers (7.004 miles); it has all kinds of corners, linked by very fast sections, which makes it difficult for teams to find the ideal aerodynamic compromise. Indeed, it is not unusual to see very strong cars in the first and third fastest sectors struggling in the second slowest, or vice versa. Some corner combinations, e.g., Eau Rouge-Raidillon, are very challenging and have unique characteristics, in this specific case strong compression that puts a lot of stress on both driver and car.
