Twenty minutes before the end of the second free-practice session in Las Vegas, a red flag was shown. For several minutes, both teams and commentators were left in the dark about the cause, until the official update arrived: the stop had been triggered by a manhole cover that had lifted at turn 17.
Race control’s decision to halt the session immediately was purely precautionary, aimed at avoiding any risk to the drivers and allowing marshals to inspect the asphalt and all covers along the affected section. After a quick check the session resumed, but only briefly: within minutes came the decision to suspend it definitively.
Once again—just as in 2023, when a similar incident damaged Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari—the Nevada street circuit is forced to confront one of its most critical weaknesses. Despite the structural work promised after last year’s chaos, the manhole issue appears far from resolved. Not exactly the ideal calling card for a Grand Prix that aims to be the most glamorous on the calendar.
