Nelsinho Piquet, full name Nelson Angelo Piquet (born on 25 July 1985 in Heidelberg, Germany), is a former Brazilian racing driver, son of three-time Formula 1 World Champion Nelson Piquet, whose career spanned single-seaters, electric racing and American series.
After starting in karting, Piquet Jr. progressed through the European junior formulae. In 2004 he won the British Formula 3 Championship with Carlin, while in 2006 he finished second in the GP2 Series. The high point of his feeder-category career came in 2007, when he won the GP2 title with ART Grand Prix, earning promotion to Formula 1.
His Formula 1 debut came in 2008 with Renault. In his rookie season he achieved a best result of second place at the German Grand Prix, scoring a podium at the Nurburgring. His F1 experience ended in 2009, a season marked by the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix incident, in which Piquet admitted to deliberately crashing on team orders, an episode that led to one of the most significant disciplinary cases in modern Formula 1 history.
After leaving Formula 1, Piquet Jr. reinvented himself in several categories. He competed in NASCAR and rallycross, but achieved his most significant results in electric single-seaters. In the 2014-2015 Formula E Championship he won the drivers’ title with China Racing, becoming the first champion in the history of the FIA electric series.
In subsequent years he continued racing across Formula E, rallycross and American series, alternating full seasons with partial programmes. He is among the few drivers to have won FIA international titles in profoundly different categories.
After the most active phase of his sporting career, Piquet Jr. progressively stepped away from full-time programmes.
