Biography of F1 driver Verstappen Jos

Jos Verstappen (Johannes Franciscus Verstappen), born on 4 March 1972 in Montfort (Limburg, Netherlands), is a former Formula 1 driver who built his reputation across karting, single-seaters and, in more recent years, rallying.

After starting in karting, his move to cars came in the early 1990s: in 1992 he dominated the Formula Opel Lotus Benelux series, while in 1993 he made a major step forward in Germany with Opel Team WTS, winning the German Formula 3 Championship at the first attempt and also taking victory at the Marlboro Masters of Zandvoort, one of the most prestigious events for junior single-seaters.

His arrival in Formula 1 came in 1994 with Benetton, in a top-level technical and sporting environment. In his rookie season he immediately achieved the best results of his F1 career with two podiums, finishing third in Hungary and third in Belgium.

Throughout the remainder of his Formula 1 career (1994-2003) he alternated seats and programmes with various teams, racing for Simtek, Footwork Arrows, Tyrrell, Stewart, Arrows and Minardi. His last full World Championship season was 2003, contested with Minardi-Cosworth.

After leaving the Circus, Verstappen continued to compete in different disciplines and, from 2022, embarked on a structured rally programme. In 2025 he undertook a schedule that also included the FIA European Rally Championship as a series rookie, alongside his activities in the Belgian championship.

On 28 September 2025 he secured the 2025 Belgian Rally Championship title.

In his private life he is the father of Max Verstappen, with whom he has shared a close sporting relationship since the junior categories, and remains a presence connected to motorsport through both personal activity and family involvement.
