Luciano Burti was born on 5 March 1975 in Sao Paulo (Brazil). After a complete education in the European junior formulae, he established himself as a solid and technically well-prepared driver, soon entering Ferrari’s development programme.
Between the late 1990s and the early 2000s he worked extensively as a Ferrari test driver, contributing to the development of the Schumacher-era cars. In parallel he competed in the Formula 3000 Championship, achieving consistent results but without winning titles.
His Formula 1 debut came in 2000 with Jaguar, followed by a full season in 2001 with Prost Grand Prix. His World Championship career was, however, marked by two very serious accidents, at Imola and above all at Spa-Francorchamps, the latter following contact with Eddie Irvine and resulting in a heavy impact with the barriers.
The physical consequences of the Spa accident led Burti to retire prematurely from Formula 1. After leaving the Circus he continued racing in other categories and remained involved in motorsport as a television commentator and technical analyst in Brazil.
