Italy has organized two Grand Prix since 1957. Modern Formula One regulations, however, dictate that a country can only hold one round of the championship, except for the European Grand Prix or a second event in America. Thus, after an initial experiment in 1979, Italy obtained calendar entry for its second Grand Prix two years later under the identity of the tiny Republic of San Marino. The Imola circuit, built in 1950, became the venue for the event. The facility is named after two legendary figures, Enzo and Dino Ferrari. Known to be very technical and thus to emphasize the skills of drivers who have to deal with rather complex combinations of turns and braking zones, Enzo Ferrari was one of the promoters of the project in building a circuit in the hills around Imola and described it as a sort of “little Nurburgring.”
With 19 corners (10 left and 9 right), totaling 4.909 km, the track shows a significant 30-meter difference in elevation from the highest to the lowest point; in addition, the track is quite narrow and there is only one DRS zone, which makes overtaking anything but easy.
The track was the sad scene of a very difficult time for Formula One, when in the year 1994, on two unfortunate days Roland Ratzenberger (Simtek) lost his life during Saturday practice and Ayrton Senna (Williams) after a few laps in the race. After those mournful moments many changes were made to the circuit, which was, moreover, already very safe. To meet the requirements of the FIA the Tamburello, Villeneuve and Variante Bassa corners were totally redesigned, however, making the track lose part of its history.
