Historical information

The Singapore Grand Prix has been held on the Singapore Street Circuit since 2008. The first Singapore Grand Prix valid for the top formula was held on September 28, 2008. It was the first Formula 1 race to be held at night. The decision to run at night time is linked to the need to ensure a convenient time for European spectators. The track is illuminated by more than 1,600 LED light projectors designed to avoid major visibility problems due to darkness. The circuit's lighting system was built by Italian Valerio Maioli and then operated by DZ Engineering of Forlì.

This circuit is best known for the “Crashgate” that took place in 2008: the race was affected by an accident involving Nelson Piquet Jr., the son of the three-time world champion namesake, on lap 13. The Brazilian of Renault ended up in the wall, prompting the entry of the Safety Car. Fernando Alonso, who had re-entered the pits a few laps earlier, took advantage of the chaos to move into the lead and win the GP; Felipe Massa was the one who suffered the consequences of the incident. The Ferrari driver entered the pits to refuel as the race leader, but due to a mistake by the technicians he was given the green light too early. So the Brazilian restarted with the refueling nozzle still attached; he was forced to retire. The six points gained from rival Lewis Hamilton proved to be a crucial spoils for the Briton's season-ending championship victory. A year later, in September 2009, the truth emerged: Piquet Jr. had been instigated by the Renault box to deliberately crash his car to benefit Alonso. This revelation led to two years of disqualification for Renault and as many years of inhibition for Pat Symonds and Flavio Briatore, at the top of the French team. Despite this, the outcome of the race was not changed, as Alonso had not been made aware of the team's plans.
