The Singapore Grand Prix has always been held on the YAS Marina circuit, built by the Aldar Properties company, which also builds the motor racing theme park, Ferrari World. The circuit initially featured twenty-one corners, from 2021 sixteen. There are four large grandstands (Main Grandstand, West Grandstand, North Grandstand and South Grandstand) and it has a distinctive pit exit that passes under the track.
Difficulties in the construction seemed to put the race in doubt for 2009, but work then proceeded apace and the circuit was handed over in mid-September 2009. On 7 October 2009, the track received final approval from the FIA. Bruno Senna was the first driver to complete a lap on the circuit.
The first Formula 1 race in Abu Dhabi was held on 1 November 2009 and was won by German driver Sebastian Vettel in the RBR-Renault. The GP is remembered for what happened in 2021, when Max Verstappen overtook Hamilton on the last lap of the race (after an accident caused by Latifi that triggered a Safety Car) and won his first world title, stopping Hamilton from winning his eighth.
