Historical information
The Australian Grand Prix has been part of the Formula One World Championship since 1985.
The first edition of a Grand Prix in Australia was held in 1927 near Sydney, but the most popular was the 100 Miles Road Race in 1928, held on the original Phillip Island track, won by Arthur White. Other venues where races were held were Lobethal, Bathurst and in the 1950s inside Albert Park, but it was not until the 1980s that the event was included in the World Championship calendar, with the first “real” Grand Prix held in Adelaide, in 1985.
Since 1996 the race has been held in Melbourne, on the Albert Park circuit, the heart of the city.
The most successful teams in Australia at the moment are McLaren and Ferrari with 11 wins each.
