The last time the Albert Park circuit had the honour of hosting the opening round of the Formula 1 World Championship was on March 17, 2019. A day that, as of today, seems to belong to another era.
Six years have passed since then, during which time stories, protagonists and destinies have changed. Back then, the paddock welcomed three new faces, ready to begin their adventure in Formula 1. Lando Norris was making his debut at the wheel of the McLaren, unaware that this would become his home, the team with which he would fight, fall and get back up to win a Constructors' World Championship. George Russell began his journey with Williams, not knowing what a future in the Mercedes family held for him: driving alongside one of the greatest champions ever. And then Alexander Albon, who was taking his first steps into the world of F1 with Toro Rosso; between dreams and unknowns, between hopes and uncertain destinies.
In 2019, Lewis Hamilton returned to the track with the weight of a newly won title. Five world championships in his pocket and a sixth to chase, with that hunger for victory that knows no respite. There common knowledge was that he was right in the middle of a golden era, and the start of the season brought with it the anticipation of a new battle.
Charles Leclerc, on the other hand, fulfilled his childhood dream: wearing Ferrari red. It was the first step in a story that would weave together strong emotions, difficult moments and unforgettable victories. A promise of glory and sacrifice. The realisation of a dream that, to this day, still awaits its most glorious chapter.
And then there was Honda, who returned to the podium (with Max Verstappen's Red Bull) after more than a decade. A sign of revenge and rediscovered pride after the McLaren's hybrid era struggles. A moment that marked the beginning of a new era for the Japanese brand, ready to rewrite its history in Formula 1.
Looking back at that day shows just how quickly the world of Formula 1 evolves. Certainties crumble rapidly as new pages are written.
Now it's back to Melbourne, where it all begins again. Who knows what stories might begin this weekend and what we will tell in a few years time about something that, perhaps, could mark another era.
