Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit

Historical information

Racing activities on this circuit began in the 1950s, except that it was not used for nearly 40 years due to protests from environmentalists.

Carved out of Albert Park, it is a semi-permanent circuit: it is obtained by connecting the perimeter roads of Albert Park Lake. When it was decided that in 1996 the Australian Grand Prix would be hosted in Melbourne, a new start straight was built with new pits attached, and some corners were modified to slow down the runs, while keeping the track's lap averages very high for a street circuit.

In 2021, changes were made to the circuit, which in its new version consists of 14 corners and is 5,278 meters long. After the layout changes, the track initially featured as many as four zones for the use of DRS, the first circuit in Formula 1 to offer such a large number of zones for the use of the moving wing, and then later reverted to three for safety reasons.

Since 1996, it has always been the scene of a GP, with the exception of 2020 and 2021, when competition stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
