Gilles Villeneuve Circuit

Historical information

The 4.361-kilometer track is named after Gilles Villeneuve and features six left-hand and eight right-hand turns, and has one of the lowest average speeds of the season.

Stability under braking and traction coming out of chicanes and slower corners, including the hairpin that leads onto a very long straight, are the keys to being competitive, as is a car that can change direction quickly. Overtaking is possible here, especially at the end of the straight leading to the last chicane, the exit of which features the “Wall of Champions,” named in honor of three world champions, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve, who ended their races there in 1999 by crashing into the wall on the outside of the corner.

A characteristic feature lies in the fact that part of the track is permanent, while the other part is obtained from urban roads, in a succession of slow and fast corners and very fast straights, which strongly stress the mechanics of single-seaters.
