Historical information

The willingness of the Azerbaijani government to host a race valid for the Formula 1 world championship had been expressed as early as May 2014, when the sports minister announced that, as of 2015, his country would host a world championship race, to be held on a street circuit designed on the streets of the capital, Baku. It was later announced that the Grand Prix would be added to the calendar for the 2016 season but, as the first edition, it took on the name of the European Grand Prix.

The organizers of the Grand Prix, at the end of the 2016 season, asked the FIA for permission to change the name of the race to the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan, starting in 2017. The Federation granted the name change, which thus entered the list of valid Grand Prix for the world championship for the first time. The first edition was held on June 25, 2017, as the eighth round of the Formula 1 World Championship, and saw the triumph of Daniel Ricciardo on Red Bull.

In the 2020 championship, the Grand Prix was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023 it hosted one of the six Sprints of the season, as well as becoming the first Grand Prix in Formula 1 history where the so-called “Sprint Shootout” was held.
