Gilles Villeneuve Circuit

Historical information

Present on the calendar since 1967, it is one of the Grand Prix protagonists of unforgettable facts: for some historic drivers it was the stage where their first victory occurred. In the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix, Ferrarista Jean Alesi scored his first victory on his 31st birthday. In addition to him and Gilles Villeneuve, other drivers who achieved their first victory here were Thierry Boutsen in 1989, Lewis Hamilton in 2007, Robert Kubica in 2008 and Daniel Ricciardo in 2014.

In the 2001 edition, for the first time in F1 history, two brothers took the first two steps of the podium: Ralf and Michael Schumacher came first and second.

The Canadian stage is also famous for serious accidents such as that of Olivier Panis in 1997. On his Prost, there was a failure of the right rear suspension: the Frenchman ended up violently against the wall, suffering a fracture of both legs. 10 years later is also remembered that of Robert Kubica at the wheel of the BMW Sauber. The car crashed into a low wall and caromed for several meters on the track, but the driver fortunately got out of the single-seater without consequences.

In 2001 it was awarded the Race Promoters' Trophy by Formula One Management as the best organized Grand Prix of the season.

In 2005, the Canadian Grand Prix was the most-watched Formula One race in the world, the third most-watched televised sporting event in the year, behind the Super Bowl final and the Champions League final.

The circuit is known for its wall of champions, located in the last corner before the main straight, named so because of the mistakes and collisions that occurred here by many drivers who later became great champions in F1 history.
