Sergio Perez Mendoza, known as Checo, was born on 26 January 1990 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He took his first steps in karting as a child and, while still very young, moved to Europe to build a structured path through the junior single-seater categories. His development from the early stages was marked by a trait that would remain constant throughout his Formula 1 career: the ability to read races and manage tyres with great effectiveness.
After his first experiences in single-seaters, in 2007 he competed in British Formula 3 and won the National Class title with T-Sport, achieving a high number of seasonal victories that quickly propelled him towards higher categories. In the following years he continued his apprenticeship between Formula 3 and international series, eventually reaching GP2, where he built a reputation as a fast but also very solid race-pace driver.
The decisive step came in the 2010 GP2 Series season: with Barwa Addax Team he finished second in the championship, scoring five victories and confirming himself among the best prospects of the junior scene. That season, for consistency and results, represented the direct springboard to Formula 1.
Perez made his Formula 1 debut in 2011 with Sauber. Already in 2012 came the breakthrough: he achieved his first career podiums and established himself as one of the reference points in tyre management, exploiting aggressive or alternative strategies and showing a remarkable ability to extend stints without losing performance. His form led to a high-profile move in 2013 to McLaren, a season however compromised by an uncompetitive car that limited results despite good individual performances.
From 2014 to 2018 he entered a long and very consistent cycle with Force India. During these years Perez became a cornerstone of the midfield, collecting numerous points finishes and several podiums, consolidating his image as an extremely effective driver in tactical races, management phases and high-degradation events.
In 2019 he moved to Racing Point, the structure that would later evolve into the Aston Martin project. The 2020 season marked his symbolic result: at the Sakhir Grand Prix he secured his first Formula 1 victory, recovering from first-lap contact and managing the decisive phases of the race with great clarity.
In 2021 he was signed by Red Bull as team-mate to Max Verstappen. From his first year he contributed significantly to the team effort and took a victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. In 2022 he delivered his best season in terms of final championship position, finishing third in the 2022 World Championship, with particularly prestigious victories at Monaco and Singapore.
In December 2024 the official separation between Perez and Red Bull was announced. As a result, he is not on the grid as a full-time driver in 2025, while evaluating a return linked to the market surrounding the new 2026 technical era.
From a technical perspective, Perez is associated with a smooth driving style that is gentle on tyres, effective in preserving traction and long-run performance. A curiosity concerns the number 11, chosen as his personal identifier throughout his career.
In 2026 Sergio Perez Mendoza will return to the grid as a full-time race driver with Cadillac, selected by the new American team for its Formula 1 debut.
