Gastón Mazzacane (born on 8 May 1975 in La Plata, Argentina) is a former Argentine racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 2000 and 2001 after a long career in South American and European junior categories.
After starting in karting in Argentina, Mazzacane moved into single-seaters in the early 1990s. He raced in Formula Renault Argentina, then moved to Europe to compete in the Formula Renault Eurocup and later the International Formula 3000 Championship. It was in F3000, in 1999, that he achieved several notable results that brought him to the attention of Formula 1 teams, although he never fought consistently for the title.
His Formula 1 debut came in 2000 with Minardi, the team with which he contested the entire season. In a very limited technical context, Mazzacane failed to score World Championship points but regularly brought the car to the finish, gaining experience at the highest level. The following year he moved to Prost Grand Prix, racing in the first part of the 2001 season before being replaced mid-year, thus ending his Formula 1 career.
After leaving the Circus, Mazzacane continued racing in various international categories. He competed in the Champ Car World Series in the United States, raced in the European Le Mans Series and took part in several endurance and GT competitions, alternating programmes between Europe and South America. In Argentina he remained a well-known figure also for his involvement in touring car series and appearances in TC 2000.
In Formula 1 Mazzacane contested a total of 21 Grands Prix, without scoring points, podiums or top-10 finishes, during a period characterised by significant technical gaps between front-running teams and backmarkers.
After gradually stepping away from international competition, Gastón Mazzacane permanently left the Formula 1 paddock.
