Patricio O’Ward (born on 6 May 1999 in Monterrey, Mexico) is a Mexican racing driver, a leading figure in American open-wheel racing and permanently integrated within McLaren’s sporting programmes.
After his beginnings in karting between Mexico and the United States, O’Ward moved to North American single-seaters, quickly standing out. In 2016 he won the Formula 4 UAE Championship, while in 2017 he claimed the Indy Lights title with Andretti Autosport, becoming one of the youngest champions in the category. The following year he competed in Japanese Super Formula, a formative experience that contributed to his technical growth despite a complex season.
His stable arrival in the IndyCar Series came from 2019, with O’Ward quickly establishing himself as one of the championship’s reference drivers. With Arrow McLaren he achieved numerous victories, podiums and pole positions, finishing several times in the top positions of the standings and fighting concretely for the title, particularly in the 2021 and 2023 seasons. His performances have made him one of the most popular drivers on the American scene, appreciated for his aggressive driving style and race management.
Alongside his IndyCar commitment, O’Ward has been included in the McLaren Formula 1 programme as a reserve and test driver. Between 2022 and 2024 he took part in several official Friday free practice sessions and private tests, working on car development and accumulating mileage with modern Formula 1 cars. His name has been linked on several occasions to possible future scenarios in the Circus, without however materialising into a race debut.
Over the course of his career O’Ward has also made selective appearances in other competitions, while keeping IndyCar as his main focus, the category in which he built his record and international reputation. Among the curiosities, he is known for the number 5, used as a tribute to his early career years, and for his strong bond with the Mexican public, which considers him one of the main ambassadors of national motorsport on a global level.
