Zhou Guanyu, born on 30 May 1999 in Shanghai (China), is a Chinese racing driver who competed in Formula 1 from 2022 to 2024, becoming the first representative of China to take part regularly in the World Championship.
Zhou’s career began very early in karting, a discipline in which he achieved notable results both in Asia and in Europe. Still very young, he moved to the United Kingdom to continue his development, entering the Ferrari Driver Academy, with which he took his first steps in single-seaters.
Between 2015 and 2018 he competed in Italian Formula 4, European Formula 3 and FIA Formula 3, achieving podiums and victories that consolidated his international profile. The real leap in quality came in Formula 2, a category in which he raced from 2019 to 2021. After an initial adaptation phase, he became one of the championship protagonists: in 2021 he finished third overall with the UNI-Virtuosi team, achieving several victories and demonstrating significant growth in race management and consistency.
His Formula 1 debut came in 2022 with Alfa Romeo, alongside Valtteri Bottas. On his debut, at the Bahrain Grand Prix, he immediately scored the first world championship points ever achieved by a Chinese driver, entering the history of the championship. Over the 2022, 2023 and 2024 seasons he stood out for reliability and his ability to bring the car to the finish, contributing regularly to the team’s points tally, although without managing to step onto the podium.
The Formula 1 experience developed during a phase of technical and managerial transition for the Hinwil-based team, with results conditioned by the competitiveness of the package. Despite some qualifying exploits and solid races in difficult conditions, at the end of the 2024 season he was not confirmed as a race driver, thus closing the first cycle of his career in the top category.
Alongside his on-track activity, Zhou has taken on a role of great media and strategic importance for the spread of Formula 1 in China, becoming a reference point for sponsors, promotional initiatives and projects linked to the expansion of the championship in the Asian market.
According to officially available information, from 2025 Zhou Guanyu has taken on the role of reserve driver within the Ferrari organisation, thus maintaining a direct link with the Formula 1 paddock.
In his private life he maintains a fairly reserved profile. His career nevertheless remains a historic milestone for Chinese motorsport, having opened a new phase of interest and visibility for Formula 1 in one of the most important global markets.
