Hartley B. 39

Biography of F1 driver Hartley Brendon

Brendon Hartley (full name Brendon Morris Hartley) was born on 10 November 1989 in Palmerston North, New Zealand. After starting in karting, he builds his path between New Zealand and Europe: he competes in junior formulas and stands out particularly in 2007, when he wins the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 with the Epsilon Red Bull team. In 2008 he races in British Formula 3 with Carlin, then continues his growth through European categories.

Between 2008 and 2010 he enters the Red Bull programme as a development and reserve driver, also working on the simulator and gaining technical experience useful for the continuation of his career. The turning point, however, comes in endurance racing: from 2012 he focuses on prototypes and, after the initial seasons, becomes a Porsche factory driver, contributing to the brand’s success in the FIA WEC. With Porsche he wins two world titles (2015 and 2017) and in 2017 also achieves overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

His entry into Formula 1 materialises at the end of 2017, when he debuts with Toro Rosso. In 2018 he contests the full season with the Faenza-based team, scoring points on two occasions (4 points in total) and achieving his best result with ninth place at the United States Grand Prix. At the end of 2018 his World Championship experience comes to an end; in 2019 he is announced as a Ferrari simulator driver and in the 2019-20 season he also competes in a Formula E championship with Dragon.

In modern motorsport he remains above all an endurance reference: in 2026 he is entered in the World Endurance Championship with Toyota Gazoo Racing, driving the GR010 Hybrid number 8, sharing the line-up with Sebastien Buemi and Ryo Hirakawa.
