Merhi R. 98

Biography of F1 driver Merhi Roberto

Roberto Merhi (born on 22 March 1991 in Castellon de la Plana, Spain) is a Spanish racing driver whose career has spanned single-seaters, Formula 1 and endurance racing, emerging through European and Japanese feeder categories before reaching the World Championship.

After starting in karting, Merhi moved to single-seaters in the early 2010s. In 2011 he won the Formula 3 Euro Series with Prema Powerteam, a result that established his international reputation. In 2012 he competed in the GP3 Series, then continued in top-level junior categories including Formula Renault 3.5 and FIA Formula 2, combining learning seasons with strong results.

In 2014 he pursued an unconventional path for a European driver by moving to Japan to race in Super Formula with Team Mugen. In his debut season he delivered immediate results and finished second overall in the championship, confirming his competitiveness on unfamiliar circuits and cars.

His Formula 1 debut came in 2015 with Manor Marussia. Merhi contested several races in the second half of the season in a very difficult technical environment. He did not score championship points, but gained direct experience of racing in the World Championship.

After Formula 1, Merhi continued his international career. In 2016 he took part in selected Formula E races with Mahindra Racing, during a formative period for the series. In parallel and in subsequent years he focused mainly on endurance racing, competing in the WEC, European Le Mans Series and Asian Le Mans Series, primarily in LMP2, as well as selected GT programmes.

In Formula 1 Merhi contested a total of 13 Grands Prix without scoring points. The most significant results of his career remain linked to his successes in feeder categories and the competitiveness shown in Super Formula and international endurance racing.
