The circuit is located in the center of Austria, in the “heart of Styria,” a green region full of hills in the center of Austria, about 200 kilometers from cities such as Vienna and Salzburg. It can be reached from the capital after a two-and-a-half-hour drive on the A1 (which is why it was formerly called the A1-Ring) and then on the S36 towards Spielberg. From Salzburg, on the other hand, it proceeds via the E60 and E57, before joining the S36
Historical Information
Il circuito fu costruito tra il 1968 e il 1969 e fu sede del Gran Premio d'Austria dal 1970 al 1987. La lunghezza originale era di 5,9 Km, ma dopo i lavori iniziati alla fine del 1995 e completati nel giugno del 1996, la pista è stata radicalmente modificata ed ha adesso uno sviluppo di 4,3 Km.
Il nuovo impianto ha un nuovo complesso box, una nuova torre di controllo per la gara, nuovi paddock, centri medici e stampa. Il rinnovato Grandstands può contenere fino a 60.000 spettatori, che vanno ad aggiungersi ai più di 150.000 che il circuito può accogliere. Il contratto per organizzare il Gran Premio, stipulato nell'ottobre 1995, durerà sei anni a partire dal 1997.
Nel 2004 viene rilevato dalla Red Bull ma solo nel 2010 viene inaugurato ufficialmente. La pista di Zeltweg è adesso molto sicura, con ben cinque rettilinei, e secondo le simulazioni computerizzate della Tyrrell consentirà velocità medie di 200-205 Km/h.
